The Maker’s Loft

Chair making is an artform best enjoyed when fully immersed in the practice – far from the distractions of the outside world.

The Maker’s Loft is a cosy studio adjacent to the Handmade Matters workshop. It’s a humble place to unwind and take in the quiet surrounds. The opportunity to stay on site affords guests a deep engagement in the making process and the chance to fully revel in the valley’s seclusion.

The Maker’s Loft is just the right size for one or two.

Crafted by Jon himself, the timber lined studio features a comfortable kitchen with sink, bar fridge and a small oven and cooktop. A day bed invites you to curl up with Jon’s treasured collection of books that celebrate all things handmade and cherish the concept of living simply. When your eyes begin to droop, climb the ladder to sink into your double bed high in the loft above.

A private bathroom, including handy laundry facilities, sits right next door to the studio. Everything you need for a comfortable stay awaits.

Whilst Jon also lives on site, guests are afforded their own privacy outside of workshop hours. You will have free reign to wander along the river and spot the resident platypus, take in an evening stroll, or simply enjoy a quiet glass of wine as the wallabies come out to graze.

Guests of The Maker’s Loft are treated to a special visit to the Styx Valley. Jon will take you to stand under some of the tallest trees in the Southern Hemisphere – deep within the ancient home of Tasmania’s most glorious timbers. It is a unique experience that will serve to forever connect you with the Handmade Matters philosophy.
